For the Halloween Funfest 2008 over at Starmen.net, I decided to recreate Happy Happy Village on Halloween night as an Unreal Tournament 3 map, when the Sharks snuck in and caused total chaos. Houses are caked in toilet paper, pumpkins are smashed, graffiti lines the sides of houses and buildings, and dropped bags of candy from terrified children are scattered all over the ground on a spooky, foggy, full moon night.
This project was completed in a single week from start to completion. It uses almost 90 hand painted texture files including diffuse, specular, normal, and emissive maps spanned over 43 separate materials, along with 51 hand created 3D models (not including level of detail models for a majority of assets in the level.) In fact, the only objects that I pulled from Unreal Tournament 3 itself was obviously the weapons and power ups, but specifically the moon and the skydome. Everything else was hand created in Maya 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop CS2 and imported into Unreal Editor 3.
Here is the original Happy Happy Village from Earthbound (SNES).
Here is my Halloween recreation.
